Choosing a used car

If you’re in the market for your next motor and aren’t sure where to start, here’s our guide to choosing a used car. With over 40 years of experience, we are on hand to help you in your search and to offer tips and tricks for finding the car of your dreams.

Budget

Before your heart gets involved in the hunt, make sure your head knows what you want. Set a clear budget and stick to it. Whether it’s an overall budget to purchase or a monthly finance budget, work out what you can comfortably afford and go from there. It’s easy to get carried away when you see a car you love, but you will only get hurt later down the line if the motor is out of you price range.

Size

How many humans or animals need to fit into this car? Have you got a whole brood following you, or is it you and the cat? Look at the size of the car accordingly as too much room and it will be a costly empty space, or too little room and you won’t fit the weekly shop in, never mind anything else.

Requirements

The practical things and the desired things. Plan what the car must have and what you would like it to have. From reversing sensors to heated front seats, while you are unlikely to find everything you are looking for, there’s a better chance of finding a suitable car when you have a clear list of what it needs and should have.

Running Costs

Consider the running costs of the vehicle and what you would like to spend. A car that drinks fuel may not be suitable and equally, a car with expensive tyres might not be your first-choice motor. Research the cars you are interested in, find out the MPG and any common problems they seem to have. The more clued up you are, the better chance you have of finding the dream car.
